Semi-Hiatus

If I do or the gradual slow-down of activity as of late does not look too conspicuous, then I should say now (and I should have said so sooner) that I am placing everything that I am doing here to a semi-hiatus until who knows when.

I have been very busy as of late, and I must exercise my most important personal priorities first.

Until that indeterminable day, please don't expect to be here often, save for being here for sharing any brief details of any important news.

Videos?

I have intended to post some more gameplay videos of online races from Mario Kart 8, but that unfortunately did not come into fruition.

The translated Japanese dub of the rest of Sonic Adventure 2? I was nearly done with the Dark Story, and I left that on hold for a while already, so all of that unfortunately became lower priorities. I hope I can get the rest done and up soon, that is, whenever I find myself the time.

And yes... All of those soundtracks to be re-uploaded...

They have more or less of the same priority as the translated Sonic Adventure 2 Japanese dub. I hope I can get to those whenever I can.

That's all.

Happy October.

Sonic Boom Going to Japan

Amid hearsay among Japanese media after the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) that the Western-exclusive Sonic Boom will also go to Japan as Sonic Toon (ソニック・トゥーン), SEGA of Japan just launched the official website of Sonic Toon.

The games will indeed be available soon for Japan. However, nothing has been mentioned about the cartoon also going to Japan.

Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric (Wii U) and Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal (3DS) is scheduled to be released this November. Sonic Toon is scheduled to be released sometime in the winter of this year. Song of the Week: June 13, 2014

Song: "Never Never"
Artist: Korn
Album: The Paradigm Shift (2013)

And I never wanna clarify
And justify
So I run and hide
And I never wanna signify
So I pacify all the hate inside

Korn is an American metal band from Bakersfield, California. Their current lineup consists of Jonathan Davis on vocals, James "Munky" Shaffer and Brian "Head" Welch on guitars, Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu on bass, and Ray Luzier on drums. Out of seven Grammy Award nominations, they have won two. Korn's fairly unorthodox approach to metal led to the introduction and mainstream breakthrough of the so-called "nu metal" subgenre, which featured other notable bands such as Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, and Linkin Park.

From Korn's latest album, The Paradigm Shift is "Never Never." "Never Never" once again dwells outside Korn's classic field of metal from their beginnings, more than a decade ago. The electronic sound likely comes from what came from their previous album, the dubstep-focused, highly experimental, one-time, not-even-really-metal-at-all The Path of Totality. Despite the song's overall simplicity, it's quite catchy for a Korn song, especially in regards to the somewhat emotive lyrics and brooding sound.

Updates: June 2014

Welcome to June 2014.

We definitely have to plenty to digest for this month.

Mario Kart 8 finally comes out with a quick million copies sold.

For Sonic Boom, SEGA formally introduces key character Sticks and the new villain, Lyric, and we got plenty of information for both versions of the games. The two versions will be distinct story-wise and gameplay-wise, beginning with the Wii U version having the subtitle Rise of Lyric, and the 3DS version having the subtitle Shattered Crystal.

You can read more about this here.

Also, Sonic the Hedgehog and his series enter year number 23 on the 23rd.

The widely-anticipated Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, runs from June 10 to June 12 at the usual venue - the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The ultimate international sporting tournament, one of "the beautiful game," the 2014 FIFA World Cup, will run in Brazil from June 12 to July 13.

The San Antonio Spurs and the Miami Heat clash once more and for a consecutive time in the NBA Finals.

The Los Angeles Kings and the New York Rangers battle in the theme of East Coast versus West Coast for the Stanley Cup.

Of course, summer (or winter) is just right around the corner.

For my first YouTube channel, I will post the cutscenes, along with the brief journals prior to starting a stage, of Sonic Adventure 2: Battle in Japanese with translations courtesy from yours truly.

For my third YouTube channel, I hope to edit and resume posting my blind playthrough of Sonic Lost World after a long, four-month hold.

SEGA Introduces Sonic Boom Character Sticks the Jungle Badger

SEGA International formally introduced another highlight character of the Western-exclusive Sonic the Hedgehog alternate series, Sonic Boom, Sticks. Sticks is a female jungle badger who is a friend of the heroic foursome of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy. Possessing a wild, fairly animalistic, and overall eccentric attitude, she is one to look out for in the world of Sonic Boom. Longtime voice actress Nika Futterman portrays Sticks.

Regardless, here's our scheduled monthly dose of Sonic Channel's Character Quiz.

Song of the Week: May 9, 2014

Hover above the Japanese words to read the words as romanized.

Song: "Zephyr"
Artist: Sukekiyo
Album: Immortalis (2014)

苦しめた君の忘れ様の無い
視線は示した全ての答え
傷付け壊し 蒸し暑い夜に
夕日を殺す花火
羅針盤を再びなぞって

I cannot forget you and your suffering
For that gaze revealed all of the answers
Wounded and broken in the humid evening
As fireworks kill the setting sun
I follow the compass once more

Sukekiyo is a Japanese rock band; it is a side project of Dir En Grey vocalist Kyo. With Kyo on vocals, the band, whose members Kyo handpicked himself, consists of former Rentrer En Soi bandmates Takumi and Mika on guitar, piano and drums, respectively, former 9Goats Black Out member Uta on guitar and violin, and former Kannivalism member Yuchi on bass. Sukekiyo recently released their first studio album, Immortalis, on April 30. Contrary to Dir En Grey's heavy approach, it features a softer, more progressive, and more experimental sound.

"Zephyr" is the fifth track of Immortalis. Melancholic and brooding, as so with most of the album, "Zephyr" showcases Kyo's impressive and ranged vocal work - minus the monstrous growls and banshee screams that he is especially known for with Dir En Grey. His high notes, especially highlighted in the chorus, can possibly equate to a lullaby - for those already grown, that is. Let's not forget the rest of the band; the guitar and drum work provide a suiting melody to this song, and they harmonize well with Kyo's vocals.

Ilya Bryzgalov is a Sonic the Hedgehog Fan?

So Ilya Bryzgalov is apparently a Sonic the Hedgehog fan?

The great "Mr. Universe," of all players...

I'm a fan of hockey; I'm absolutely not a fan of the Minnesota Wild, but I can't help but laugh when SEGA noted this. I didn't know Bryz had this on his helmet in the NHL Playoffs, or if not, ever since or sometime since he came from the Edmonton Oilers.

A very weak and horrible connection, but should I be surprised that could be possibly why the Minnesota Wild defeated the Colorado Avalanche and advanced to the Western Conference Semifinals? Haha.

Bryzgalov's a good goaltender as he already demonstrated in his tenure with the Phoenix Coyotes and the Philadelphia Flyers - when he clearly shows he's good amid his eccentric antics, however.

Songs of the Week: April 29, 2014

Songs: "Parabol," "Parabola"
Artist: Tool
Album: Lateralus (2001)

Swirling round with this familiar parable
Spinning, weaving round each new experience
Recognize this as a holy gift and
Celebrate this chance to be alive and breathing

Tool is a three-time Grammy Award-winning American rock band from Los Angeles, California. Although the band initially favored a heavy sound, the band's overall sound, as their more recent and notable works showcase, feature an experimental, progressive rock approach with unorthodox time signatures and complex arrangements. The band strongly emphasizes sound to relay their desired tones, emotions, and themes in each of their songs.

"Parabola," which transitions from the previous song on Lateralus, "Parabol," is one of my most favorite songs from Tool. Although the heavy sound indeed stands out, "Parabola's" lyrics pop out more - a meaningful message to enjoy life as a "holy experience;" embrace our own mortality to the fullest, and disregard all pain as they are just "illusions."

Song of the Week: April 22, 2014

Song: "The Wonders of You (feat. Lyle Day)"
Artist: Andy Hunter
Album: Exodus (2002)

Often imitated
Never duplicated
Only One original
Underrated
Perfect in ways in which we could be
Others like Him
Never will be

Andy Hunter is a British DJ and Christian electronic artist. Plenty of films, movies, and video games feature his works, such as "Go." This, along with relative critical praise for his debut studio album, Exodus, Hunter grew popular within his own musical scene.

From Exodus is "The Wonders of You," the second track of the album, which features rapper Lyle Day. Notably featured in EA Games' Need for Speed: Underground, the song, as with all songs of Exodus, feature Christian and biblical themes and lyrics of worship and praise. Beyond and accompanying the spiritual undertones of this song, however, are groovy, breaking beats that produce this song's sense of speed.

Song: “Flame Core ~Volcano~”
Artist: Tomoya Ohtani
Album: Sonic the Hedgehog Original Sound Track (2007)

Yasutaka Kume helps shred insanely into bits my most favorite song in the best game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Listen to that guitar work!

I'm not surprised why I got S-Ranks in my first runs through Flame Core as Sonic and Shadow.

April 11, 2014

Updates: April 2014

Hello, April.

How about that jolt of hype from Sakurai earlier this month on his presentation of the new Super Smash Bros. Direct?

He presented plenty of what the next iteration of Nintendo's renowned beat-em-up fighter will bring: custom moves, changes to particular characters, Yellow Devil, Ridley, and perhaps other notable bosses as game-changing hazards in respective stages, Field Smash (Smash Run) with the nostalgic nod to Kirby Air Ride's City Trial mode, and so on.

That's a lot to look forward to as the Nintendo 3DS version comes this summer and the Nintendo Wii U version this winter.

Anyway, as for here and me this month... Nothing.

However, I managed to record gameplay of Sonic Lost World's latest addition: The Legend of Zelda zone. I intended from the beginning to post two gameplay videos of each of the game's bonus levels - a blind playthrough and a careful playthrough. Depending on circumstances that will come this month, although my finished-but-yet-to-edit-and-post blind playthrough of Sonic Lost World is on hold, I hope I will be able to post the careful playthrough videos of the bonus levels in the BLACKBLUR7 channel.

Speaking of Sonic Lost World, Of course, as all of you have likely seen, I posted the cutscenes of Sonic Lost World, in the Japanese dub, with careful translations from yours truly for your script-comparing entertainment. See how the story of Sonic Lost World goes in Japanese!

And lastly, the updated soundtrack list as of the time of this post:

-Cuts Unleashed - Sonic Adventure 2 Vocal Collection
-Vivid Sound x Hybrid Colors - Sonic Colors Original Soundtrack
-Face to Faith - Sonic and the Black Knight Vocal Trax
-Tales of Knighthood - Sonic and the Black Knight OST
-Sonic Rush Original Groove Rush
-Sonic Rush Adventure Original Soundtrack
-Sonic Adventure Songs With Attitude - Vocal Mini-Album
-Sonic Adventure Original Sound Track - Digi-Log Conversation
-Sonic Adventure Remix
-Sonic Lost World Original Soundtrack - Without Boundaries
-Sonic Generations Original Soundtrack: Blue Blur
-Planetary Pieces: Sonic World Adventure Original Soundtrack

I hope all of you have a wonderful April and Easter.

Opinion: Music of the Sonic the Hedgehog Series

Twinny of RadioSEGA recently asked me via Tumblr regarding my opinion on the music of the Sonic the Hedgehog series.

Click here to see what I have to say regarding the relatively unforgettable beats that highlight the series.

Song of the Week: April 6, 2014

Song: “An Island"
Artist: Chevelle
Album: La Gárgola (2014)

They said this fun is near the end
You've worn out welcome way too fast
You'd better bite your tongue

I need an island and I need it fast
Some little island is all I ask

To put you on

Chevelle is a three-man American rock band from Grayslake, Illinois. Their music is usually heavy and grungy, particularly on the guitars, with often dark overtones, which make the band lean towards the alternative metal or post-grunge sides. Their notable hit songs include "Send the Pain Below" and "The Fad."

"An Island" is the second song from Chevelle's latest release, La Gárgola. Transitioning from the previous song, "Ouija Board," "An Island," although relatively simply structured for its five-minute span, features the gritty guitar work that brought the band into the spotlight as they introduced in their earlier albums Wonder What's Next and This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us In). This familiar and unique rocking style of Chevelle's would make this song an instant highlight of this album to longtime fans of the band.

April 1, 2014

Song of the Week: April 1, 2014

Hover above the Japanese words to read the words as romanized.

Song: "迷彩" ("Meisai")
Artist: Sadie
Album: Undead 13+2 (2008)

雁字搦め薔薇薔薇の比較例の孤独色
初期衝動に俺は怯えていた
雑句場乱に散って逝く 理性そして明日さえ
嗚呼 声は届きますか?

Being bound and loosed in the color of loneliness
My first impulse was to be frightened
As dreams and even tomorrow continue to disappear
Oh... Can you hear my voice?

Sadie (pronounced "sah-dee") is a Japanese rock and metal band from Osaka. They are of the vaguely-defined "visual kei" musical scene, of which bands such as X-Japan, Buck-Tick, and Luna Sea introduced and pioneered with the use of flamboyant aesthetics and clothing.

From their second single, 溺哀 -dekiai-, and their first album of a collection of their first singles, Undead 13+2, "迷彩" (which means "disguise" or "camouflage") is relatively nothing far from ordinary but simply showcases the band's usually dark and heavy musical approach.

March 24, 2014

Song of the Week: March 24, 2014

Song: "To Be Alive"
Artist: Coldrain
Album: The Enemy Inside (2011)

It's me against myself this time
Me against the world I hide
Can I overcome and find a way
To be alive

Coldrain is a Japanese rock and alternative metal band from Nagoya. All of their songs are entirely in English.

"To Be Alive," the first song of Coldrain's 2011 album, The Enemy Inside, showcases the band's hardcore style - with Japanese-American vocalist Masato's mix of screams and clean vocals, and the familiar guitar riff patterns - which make the band comparable to their Western counterparts.

Song of the Week: March 18, 2014

Song: "I Choose Noise"
Artist: Hybrid
Album: I Choose Noise (2006)

Hybrid is a Welsh electronic music group from Swansea that specializes in the breakbeat and progressive breakbeat subgenres. Outside their studio work, they did many remixes and composed the scores of several films, television shows, and video games.

"I Choose Noise," the third track of the 2006 album of the same name, is a suspenseful mix of orchestra and electronic music elements - a mix that Hybrid has followed and played along since their first studio album, Wide Angle.

Song of the Week: March 10, 2014

Song: "Live & Learn ...main theme of "SONIC ADVENTURE 2"
Artist: Crush 40
Album: Cuts Unleashed: Sonic Adventure 2 Vocal Collection (2001)

Live and learn
Hanging on the edge of tomorrow
From the works of yesterday
If you beg or if you borrow
You may never find your way

And after several months, "song of the week" returns.

And what better song should I choose for this returning kind of blog post than a very notable song from [a likewise notable game from] the Sonic the Hedgehog series [considering almost the entire lot of you followers are also Sonic the Hedgehog fans]?

And the irony that I haven't listened to a single vocal song from the Sonic the Hedgehog series in quite a while...

March 6, 2014

Updates: March 2014

And so, we are now into the third month of the year - March.

And of course, spring (or fall) is right around the corner.

Elsewhere in the world, in the midst of a successful 2014 Winter Olympic Games in the Russian resort city of Sochi, Russia continues to be on headlines in its suspicious politics with a long-time, civilly restless and unhappy Ukraine.

I do hope all of the issues and misunderstandings there will be sorted peacefully soon...

Anyway, like last month, March here will be relatively quiet.

However, for the BLACKBLUR7 YouTube channel, although my already-finished blind playthrough of Sonic Lost World is currently on hold, I will post all cutscenes of Sonic Lost World, in the Japanese dub, of course, in one video, with already-finished translations from yours truly for your viewing and script-comparing enjoyment.

That said, hope I will be able to post the rest of my blind playthrough of Sonic Lost World this month.

As for my fairly forgotten relatively-underground-music-featuring BLACKBLURX YouTube channel, I still have absolutely no idea what to post next there.

Lastly, here are the soundtracks that are available to download at the time of this post:

-Sonic Adventure Songs With Attitude - Vocal Mini-Album
-Sonic Adventure Original Sound Track - Digi-Log Conversation
-Sonic Adventure Remix
-Sonic Lost World Original Soundtrack - Without Boundaries
-Sonic Generations Original Soundtrack: Blue Blur
-Planetary Pieces: Sonic World Adventure Original Soundtrack

Until then, I hope you all have a pleasant March.

This is...

...Amy Rose.

Like last months' entry with Vector and Setsubun (節分), this month's entry features Amy prepared for Hinamatsuri (雛祭り), another traditional and notable national festival day in Japan, which will be on March 3. Hinamatsuri, hence its name, is particularly known for its widespread and traditional display of ornamental dolls, or hina (雛). The ornamental dolls, which depict the Emperor, the Empress, and other royal attendants in traditional court dresses, are placed on red-carpeted, descending-leveled platforms with the Emperor and the Empress on top, and the rest of the attendants, based on rank, on the lower levels. The dolls are historically known and believed to trap and capture evil spirits.

Here, we have Amy, dressed in an appropriately-colored kimono, holding a hina of none other than Sonic.

Updates: February 2014

Halfway into the second month of February, clearly, things have already been moving very slowly - perhaps to a crawl.

Indeed, I will safely assume, a good number of us are already back in the campus or the classroom, including myself.

So far, I will define February as these...

Sonic Boom, with the word "reboot" seemingly written all over it, really got some heat among fans of the Sonic the Hedgehog series, especially the long-timers. After some fairly instant clarifications, Sonic Boom is not a reboot of the series, but simply a reimagining of the series - in other words, a separate canon - that is, interestingly, exclusive for the Western audiences. Given this, the heat seems to be gradually dissipating one week after SEGA's official announcement and further revelation of the cartoon and the Nintendo-exclusive video game.

For a reimagination that seeks to cater to the newer, younger audiences, I will say that Sonic Boom looks fairly promising.

Setting that aside, here, things are clearly at a standstill. Except for my ongoing blind playthrough on Sonic Lost World, do not expect me to post much. On the other hand, unfortunately, the blind playthrough is currently on hold. I hope I will be able to allocate enough time for myself to edit and post the remainder of the series as soon as possible.

Additionally, with the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia underway, unfortunately, contrary to perhaps a number of you might have anticipated, I will not be able to post any gameplay of Mario and Sonic at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games for the Nintendo Wii U. I have barely played two hours of the game; actually, I have not been playing anything as of late.

Lastly, I hope I will be able to re-post all of the soundtracks for Sonic Adventure soon. However, I cannot guarantee that I will post them all again by the end of this month. Nevertheless, look forward to them.

That is all for now.

Happy Valentine's Day.

I hope you all have a wonderful February.

Sonic Boom Officially Announced

This was the heat of today.

SEGA officially announced Sonic Boom - the game and the television series. The announcement came as a meteor threatening the long-standing series and its fans. It looked like a potential reboot of the series, which has been under plenty of scrutiny for the last several years.

So far, the [potential side] series' premise simply revolves around the main Sonic squad: Sonic, Tails, [a bulky] Knuckles, and Amy. Their nemesis is the one-and-only Dr. Eggman, who continues to threaten the fearsome foursome with his endless army of robots and mechanical creations.

While the television series, which SEGA of America will co-produce with OuiDO! Productions, aimed at children, is set for the last quarter of this year on Cartoon Network in the United States, the video game, which will be Nintendo-exclusive, will be planned to be released next year. The video game will acts as the prequel to the television series.

While all of this is a long time away, the burning question among us longtime fans is whether or not this will be a reboot. As one who, growing up, was once a fan of the original Spyro the Dragon series, though my interest for the series already dwindled at the time as I began to favor the Sonic the Hedgehog series, the series' reboot into the more dramatic The Legend of Spyro series and in turn, the surprisingly successful and fun Skylanders series were two, almost lethal shots to my childhood. With "reboot" written all over this one, it seems so far, until then, I, along with some of you varied longtime fans, will be on the receiving end of a larger gunshot.

By saying that, however, I do not intend to say that I will be moving on from the series from this point. Sonic Boom looks great, and I hope it will attract new, younger, up-and-coming fans to this series with its fun, full-of-attitude cast of characters - an aspect that, I believe, a significant number of the older, longtime fans truly recognize.

However, I found myself another burning question, and the question is one that suggests that a light at the end of the tunnel still exists.

Sonic Boom, the video game, is under the care of California-based Big Red Button Entertainment for the Wii U version and Sanzaru games for the Nintendo 3DS version. Sonic Team is only collaborating with the two developers.

Additionally, for a series such as Spyro the Dragon, the original developers simply dumped the series. For the original Spyro the Dragon's case, Insomniac Games dumped the feisty dragon out of lack of ideas and started Ratchet and Clank.

Here, Sonic Team is still in the picture. For Sonic Boom, Sonic Team is simply collaborating with the two developers on the game. Sonic Boom, as I mentioned, is a joint effort between SEGA of America and OuiDO! Productions for another approach of the series.

So, what happened to Sonic Team? What's next on their agenda?

They're the final arbiter of the series, so let's see how things play out in Japan as time passes.

Be on the lookout for what comes from Japan.

Click here for more official details from SEGA International.

Update: I've been hearing and reading plenty of words that the final arbiter from Japan, notably Iizuka, are considering this to be separate from the main series. Essentially, Sonic Team appears to relay that Sonic Boom is more or less of an alternate canon. Additionally, I've been hearing and reading that this is catered to the Western audiences and everyone outside of Japan, and Japan will not get any taste of it, or they will not get it anytime soon. As one who follows the series as it comes out of Japan than here in the United States, that is a relief on my part. Of course, nothing lasts forever, and things change over time. Let's still look out for what comes from Japan.

Sonic Lost World (Wii U - Japanese) - Blind Playthrough Part 4 - Desert Ruins Zones 3-4

"Who's That Character?" - January 2014 - Answer

Which character from the Sonic the Hedgehog series is this?

This is obviously...

...Vector the Crocodile.

Vector's outfit is a nod to Setsubun (節分), a religious and cultural event in Japan that denotes the beginning of spring in the original Japanese calendar. The event, closely related to the lunar new year, is more or less of the original Japanese calendar's "New Year's Eve." Its highlight is the ritual of throwing handfuls of soybeans out of the entrance of a household to ward off demons, called oni (鬼), and bad luck, and instead welcome good luck. The box that Vector is holding is a box of those soybeans.

Mid-month Update: January 2014

Look who's popular.

Excuse me for all of the ruined images on my Blogger and Tumblr. Clearly, I've reached the bandwidth limit of my free Photobucket account. Until I find a more suitable image-sharing website and share the images there instead of waiting for the bandwidth cap to reset, please mind the ugliness and unfortunately, being unable to download any wallpapers or icons here.

Things have been moving fairly slow lately.

That's all.

Updates: January 2014

Happy New Year!
We've finally come to another beginning of things to come.

For the first month of the year, BLACKBLUR7 and BLACKBLURX will have nothing. BLACKBLUR7X will have the Sonic Lost World blind playthrough, which, clearly, is already delayed a bit. I hope I will be able to post that early in the month.

Since last month, many people have been asking me "Where are the soundtracks?" To those of you who asked me that, please note the banner at the top of this blog:

ATTENTION!
ALMOST ALL DOWNLOAD LINKS TO ALMOST ALL SOUNDTRACKS ARE CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE.
Alternative links to some soundtracks through iTunes are available.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

Since I am just ONE person, and I don't spend my daily life in front of a computer every day, I cannot go through and upload all of the soundtracks anytime soon. Please be patient.

To clarify the situation, however, here are the soundtracks that are available to download at the time of this post:

-Sonic Lost World Original Soundtrack - Without Boundaries
-Sonic Generations Original Soundtrack: Blue Blur
-Planetary Pieces: Sonic World Adventure Original Soundtrack

I will give an updated list in each post of updates.

Until then, Happy New Year.
